Based in Truro, Nova Scotia, the Cantabile Choral Society was formed in 1981 for the purpose of supporting the activities of the Cantabile Singers of Truro. Over the past 15 years, the Society also fostered young music making with choirs for children and youth, most recently launching the new Cantabile Children's Choir in fall 2024 (Bette Pring, conductor).
The Cantabile Singers of Truro, the Society’s flagship program, provides eclectic concert programming for its audience in Truro and around the province, ranging from large scale classical works (i.e. Handel’s Messiah and Rutter’s Requiem) to a range of folk, popular, multinational, and contemporary styles. In recent seasons they have recorded arrangements of Nova Scotia folk musician Robbie Smith with Leaf Music, collaborated with several Maritime choirs in rehearsal and concert, and premiered the new Missa Pro Terra (Mass for the Earth) by NS composer Dr. Paul Aitken.
Succeeding previous directors Jeff Joudrey and Ross Thompson, Chris Bowman began working as Artistic Director of the Society in 2013. Chris strives to bring singers of all ages and musical backgrounds together, and is proud to champion new works, as well as music by Canadian composers.
We are always looking for new singers. Cantabile Singers rehearse Monday nights and the new Cantabile Children's Choir rehearses Tuesday afternoons. Send us an email, we'd love to have you!
